I am unable to login or logout of my site if I have the Jomsocial Frontpage set as the home page. I can't seem to grasp the unexpected complicated nature of this. I am open to suggestions. I have read the toolbar stuff and it's just NOT registering with me.

pelase check it, I fixed for you. that becuase Jomsocial Redirect plugin is not setup properly. having wrong redirect value.
if all redirects (login, logout) must going to jomsocial home (main menu home) you can turned off

When logged in as mathialoc, when I click on profile on the Jomsocial menu I get a 500 error

interesting. I just logged in as support and it works fine. When I try to look at my mathialoc user from support I get a 500.

Ok I found it. Old plugins that were still installed on my profile that were no longer installed on the Jomsocial app. removed them and now the profile displays.

One last thing. there are 353 registered users on the site but the dashboard reads 54 members??? I'm wondering if something is out of whack somewhere, but I don't know where to look?
